JOINT PRESS STATEMENT MAY 5, 2010

Of
Chiefs, Elders, Women & Youth Numoweh & Kudemoweh Chiefdoms

Fellow comrades, Government officials present, members of the senior staff of the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL), members of other International nongovernmental and Human Rights organizations, members of the Media, fellow Compatriots, Brothers & Sisters, Ladies and Gentlemen:

We thank all of you for granting us an audience by accepting our invitation to be here with us today during our Press Conference being held in the Hall of the Catholic Mission. We want to use this time and occasion to express our strongest distaste and discontent with the unjust, unlawful activities of the Government of the Republic of Liberia and its accomplices against our people.

We wish to thank UNMIL for its ongoing advisory role to the Liberian government and our people during these difficult times.  We also thank The Catholic Justice & Peace Commission (JPC) and the Center for Sustainable Human Development Inc. including other Human Rights organizations that we cannot name for lack of space and time. Indeed, we are grateful to all the people of Maryland and the Republic of Liberia for their ongoing support during these difficult times.  We welcome you all to this Press Conference.

Who are we and what do we stand for?

The Concerned Citizens Action Committee of Maryland County, shortly referred to as, CCAC, is a representation of the people of the Kudemoweh and Numoweh chiefdoms of the Harper District of Maryland County. We are the voice of both Chiefdoms. We were established in March, 2010. We are a creation of the arbitrary, unconstitutional and unlawful arrests of Maryland citizens couple with the reckless behavior of both National and local governments in the recent ritualistic killing case in the County. Our purpose is to protect the interests of both Chiefdoms and all Marylanders in all matters affecting them and to attain their freedom from all discriminatory laws and actions whatsoever. To this end, since our establishment, we have endeavored by every constitutional method to bring to the notice of the Government and international community the legitimate demands of peace-loving and law-abiding Maryland citizens, especially those who have been arbitrarily arrested and arbitrarily detained. We have also repeatedly pressed, in particular, the inherent rights of those comrades of ours to be directly represented in all court proceedings regarding the false incrimination and imprisonment of the arrestees.

This attitude to form the CCAC is a demonstration not only of the willingness and readiness of peace-loving Kudemoweh and Numoweh citizens and residents to cooperate with the Government but also evidence of our sincere desire for peace, harmony, friendship, justice and tolerance amongst all sections of our population.

Now let’s begin to deal with the Issue before us:

First, let’s make it very clear to the whole world and the people of Liberia that we categorically condemn, in no uncertain terms, the barbaric acts of ritualistic killings with all the emphasis we can command. No one has the right to murder another person. PERIOD!

In the event murder is committed, it is our strongest belief the accused killer MUST be immediately arrested under the guidance of our Constitution. The accused MUST be given a Speedy & Fair Trial under the Law of Due Process. If that person is convicted through a competent court of jurisdiction, we believe the Law of the land should and MUST take its course.

Equally so, we openly and, without mixing words, condemn with all the emphasis we can command, the arbitrary arrest of any citizen and/or resident on cardboard box evidence especially so, when the arrest is determined by a juju man’s “mojo.”.

It is in this spirit we encourage both the Government and people to respect human life and the Rule of Law.

Recently, the Government of Liberia exercised a repressive policy of arbitrary arrest, imprisonment, segregation and Gestapo-styled tactics of treatment of our people in Maryland County. The Government continues to insult and degrade our citizens and residents that have been arbitrarily arrested and unlawfully detained by depriving them of their fundamental human and constitutional rights enjoyed by all democratic people around the world. The Government categorically rejects offers to respect the Constitution of this Republic and grant the accused their human and constitutional rights. The consequence, therefore, has been the gradual worsening of human relations in Maryland County and a rising tide of bitterness and tension. Such a position by the Government has aggravated our people more when it clandestinely, under the cover of darkness, removed the accused from where they were held in prison to an unknown destination for unknown reasons.

In this situation, we have realized that the cumulative Gestapo tactics of the Government shows that its sole intent is to crush potential and emerging leaders of our County. We believe the Government’s intent in this case is to also destroy the economic position of all of those citizens who strongly and openly oppose bad governance in the County. We also realize the Government is making assiduous efforts to deny these emerging leaders the full capacity to seek elective positions in the upcoming election of 2011. We consider this approach by Government as a Gestapo tactic employed by Hitler Germany prior to the World War to silence its opponents. This Government tactic is also meant to prevent the unity and development of our County and people especially the Kudemoweh and Numoweh chiefdoms and at the same time, humiliate them by charging its children of million of “crimes” committed many years ago.

We have no doubt in our minds that this current wave of arbitrary arrests in Maryland is politically motivated. It is a fear and smear tactic employed by both the Government and the Maryland Legislative Caucus to suppress our good leaders from challenging those who have currently failed us.

The following points summarize the events that raised our eyebrows:
1.     A month before the arrest of the accused, threatening cell phone texts (SMS) were sent to a selected few. The messages claimed the selected few who received those messages were “killers.” And that they were already known by the Government. The messages continued by saying the selected individuals would be arrested in due course. Suddenly, a witch doctor arrived in Harper City and remained in the City for close to a week without being monitored. Soon he employed his magic pen. His magic pen only was able to identify the selected individuals who received threatening text messages prior to his coming. As strange as it was, all the arbitrary arrests were immediately closed as soon as all the selected names were arrested and jailed.
2.     Was it by accident that at the completion of the arbitrary arrests 7 Kudemoweh and 7 Numoweh citizens were in police custody? How and who obtained such a strange balance of citizens from both chiefdoms? Notice, these two Chiefdoms have been under intense pressure by the Government and Caucus for a protracted period of time. Why? Because there’s a thinking in the Caucus and some local government quarters that the Numoweh and Kudemoweh chiefdoms do enjoy most of the better jobs in the County. And that these two chiefdoms hold almost all the best educated persons in the County. Strangely indeed, this Government and Caucus strongly share the belief that all possible contenders for elective posts in 2011 would definitely come from both Chiefdoms. And so to keep them out of the race, they had to employ the Gestapo tactics of Hitler Germany: purge them!
3.     During these arbitrary arrests, only Cllr. Fulton Yancy’s house was searched. When he was taken to court after mounting pressure from the people and Defense Counsel, the Circuit Court considered the search unlawful and illegal. Why did the witchdoctor refuse to search the homes of the balance 16 men and one woman? Was the Government only aiming at Cllr. Yancy alone? If so, why? Well, Cllr. Yancy was set free on Bail until reports surrounding items supposedly collected from his home are professionally examined and made available to the Court.
4.     The witch doctor coming to Harper to perform his mojo was a unilateral decision made by few individuals in the Caucus and local Government along with their friends. The entire County and its civil society were not contacted. So no civil society member agreed to the selection of the witch doctor or partook in the events producing the witch doctor.
5.     The witch doctor performed behind close-door. Besides those who brought him to Harper (some Caucus members and some Local government officials), he did not perform for anyone else to see how he derived at the selected names and/or conclusions. This act troubles the mind of every civilize man and woman on earth!
6.     The witch-doctor’s magic pen understandably named all the culprits but did not remember the name of the Nigerian pastor. If the pen has such magical power to write the full names of those arrested, how come it could not write down the name of the Nigerian pastor? Did it forget? Or those who gave the names did not know the name of the Nigerian pastor?
7.      In the beginning, the Liberian Government informed everyone that Madam Doeayenen Landford was its “Best” witness who is or was an “eyewitness” to the murder. But when she appeared in Court, she said she did not see anyone or anything. And she asked that nobody should force her to lie on anyone that she did not see commit murder. To date, the lady is now a suspect instead of being a “State witness” in the case. Why? Is it because she refused to read the government’s script and refused to falsely accuse innocent people? To date, Madam Doeayene Landford is also languishing in incommunicado.
8.     Amb. H. Dan Morais was arrested along with others and kept in jail for more than 72 hours without a charge. His and others’ constitutional rights were violated. When pressure came to bear on the Government of the Republic of Liberia from the people and legal defense, the Government decided to set them free. Why in the process of setting Ambassador Morias free, he was immediately arrested again for the “murder” of one Alphonso Chelleh. This case of Alphonso Chelleh was never mentioned while the Ambassador was unlawfully and illegally jailed. But as soon as the Government found that it had no reason to hold him in jail, it manufactured one case under the cardboard box. The case was then taken to court. The Harper Magisterial Court found no merits in the case. And so it dismissed the charges and set the Ambassador free. Then another attempt to rearrest him and others was made for the murder of another person. This time, they dragged in the case of the “murder” of Madam Tumu Weade Allison. Understandably, she was murdered on Lake Sheppard. All in all, the Government witch-hunting and launching political smear tactics continued.
9.     Mr. Roland Barlea is one of the followers of the witch doctor and one of those who secretly brought him into Harper to perform his magic. Mr. Barlea and one of the accused (Lancelot Clarke) were coworkers at the J. J. Dossen Memorial Hospital in Harper. Mr. Barlea was chief administrator and Lancelot Clarke was maintenance supervisor. But a problem developed at the Hospital that involved Mr. Barlea. An investigation was conducted by the Hospital and the Liberia National Police. Mr. Barlea was found guilty for motor cycle theft. Immediately Mr. Barlea was suspended for time indefinite. The Hospital appointed Mr. Clarke as acting administrator. Since then, Mr. Barlea has developed hatred for Mr. Clarke. As a result, he pointed Mr. Clarke out for crime of murder to the witch-doctor during the arrests. As a result of Mr. Barlea’s involvement and influence over the witch-doctor, Mr. Lancelot Clarke is now in prison. Is this the respect for Rule of Law or Gestapo tactics?
10.                        On February 5, 2010 a letter was written. The letter requested the immediate removal from office of Hon. Alfred T. Thompson, district commissioner of the Harper District. The letter stated clearly that the reason for the request to remove Hon. Thompson was that he (Hon. Thompson) was “inactive” in joining the secret effort to arrest citizens who occupy very important jobs in the Harper District. The author of the letter is a staunch member of one of the disgruntled groups friendly with the witch-doctor. As a result of this letter, Hon. A. T. Thompson is now incriminated and now languishing in prison unjustly.
11.                        Just about this same time when the arbitrary arrest was ongoing, Hons. Gloria Scott and John Ballout were in Maryland. These elected officials have never cared to come to Harper at anytime when citizens were murdered. But this time, considering their connection with the witch-doctor and gearing up in a campaign mood and wanting to crush their potential opponents, they arrived in Maryland and took part in the arrest one way or the other. They embarked upon speaking engagements inciting citizens to riot if the accused were ever released from jail. In fact, our investigation tells us that these two Senators deceived President Sirleaf into believing Harper City was on fire and that the youths were burning houses in opposition to the possible release of the detainees. When the Police arrived from Monrovia to Harper, Harper City was as cool as a watermelon. The Police realized there was no riots and violence in the City. What the Senators said was a total a lie! Why are these two Senators deeply involved in these sad developments and using Gestapo tactics of Hitler Germany? SIMPLE! They are looking forward to re-election. And because they are unpopular, they MUST purge everyone else and keep the County under fear.
The CCAC of Maryland representing the people of the Kudemoweh and Numoweh chiefdoms cannot remain silent on an issue like this that is a matter of life and death to our people and patrimony; to do so would be to betray the trust and confidence placed in us by our people.
At a recent Conference held from the 27th to the 29th April this year in Bigtown,
Hoffman Station, the whole policy of the Government to continually & arbitrarily
arrest our citizens and residents on cardboard box evidence and through a juju
man’s “mojo” was reviewed and after serious and careful consideration of the
matter, the Conference unanimously resolved to call upon the Government of the
Republic of Liberia, as we hereby do today, to discontinue the arbitrary arrests by
NOT LATER THAN THE 9th DAY OF MAY, 2010. Failing to do so, CCAC will hold
protest meetings and demonstrations on dates of our own choosing as a prelude
to the implementation of the plan for the defiance of unjust laws.

1. We pledge to continue promoting the consolidation of democratic norms, values, and institutions throughout the County and to enhance accountability and respect for individual & Human rights.
2.  We are determined to rid our county of any manner of ritualistic killings and disrespect for Law and Order.  We acknowledge President Ellen’s Commitment and Oath to uphold, Defend and Protect the Constitution of this Republic. We further ask her to commit herself to the harmonization of our African culture with Eurocentric ideas consistent with global standards for the advancement of people
3.  We agree to increase cooperation efforts between all the Districts of Maryland as well as all ethnic groupings.  We commit to strengthen this cooperation by engaging all members of the society including academic institution.  We also commit to strengthen human relations to meet the demands of the 21st century through partnering with academic institutions and non-governmental groups as well as through skills training for youth
4. We declare our intention to oppose the Maryland Legislative wicked tactics to divide our people and sow seeds of disunity in our various communities.
5.   We are disheartened by the ongoing Gestapo tactics of the National
Government, hands-in-gloves with our Legislative Caucus to unlawfully arrest,
detained; remove our citizens to unknown destinations. These citizens exercise
their constitutional, democratic and human rights to compete in the business
sector and vie for elective and/or appointed post in and outside government.
What’s wrong when they compete so much so the Government takes offense?

6.  On the occasion of the clandestine removal of our relatives, love ones and
law-abiding citizens and residents accused of murder to a far away distance from
us, when as a matter of fact and record they have not been provided Due Process as provided under our constitution, we condemn both the National government and  our Legislative Caucus for instituting the activities of Hitler Germany which is fear terrorism.

We are prepared to take our Local & Legislative leaders up to task. We strongly believe they are behind this entire hullabaloo. They need to come clean! Our investigation proves that they are working with disgruntled elements in our community. And the intent of these disgruntled elements is to sow seeds of disunity amongst our people. We believe the National government, local government and Legislative Caucus are executing the plans of these disgruntled elements just to undermine development and progress in the County.

We believe the Maryland Legislative Caucus deceived President Sirleaf to appoint our current Superintendent, Hon. Gblebo Brown. It is open secret that Hon. Betsy Kuoh from the Barrobo District was set to become the next Superintendent of Maryland. To our utmost surprise and dismay, President Sirleaf appointed Hon. Gblebo Brown due to the fact that the chair of the caucus misinformed the President. She said that Marylanders rejected madam Kouh. The appointment Of Hon. Gblebo Brown was not up to the taste of majority of the citizenry of Maryland. But we accepted the appointment on grounds the Constitution provides that the President can appoint whomever s/he deems fit for the job. But since the appointment of Hon. Gblebo Brown, the County has been on the verge of severe problems, division and chaos.
In closing, we are determined to take those involved in dividing our county and imposing terrorists activities upon our people up to task.

Until justice is done, the struggle remains unabated!

Fifteen Reasons Why President Sirleaf Needs To Visit Maryland County and Hear The People’s Cry:

Fifteen Reasons Why President Sirleaf Needs To Visit Maryland County and Hear The People’s Cry:

1.       The West African Power Pool (WAPP) which is supposed to provide electricity to Maryland has failed and is exactly two years behind schedule as per its sponsors: EU & AfDB.
2.       Currently, a handful of individuals have received electricity. Majority, forming the larger commercial & private sector have been left out.
3.       More than 30 young men and women served as volunteers in three years planting light polls manually and doing the wiring.
4.       The planting of polls covers 75% and wiring covers 10% of Harper District. There are polls stretching to some parts of Pleebo/Sodokeh District. But there is little evidence these young men and women who gave us electricity will be hired.
5.       The volunteers are worried whether or not they will ever be employed having served in that capacity for three unbroken years without compensation. Could they hire friends and relatives?
6.       The Tubman University is an academic promise to Southeastern Liberia and the nation as a whole. It is growing. Is the allotment from Government also growing to support the University?
7.       All Maryland elected officials in The Liberian Congress are at loggerhead with President Sirleaf. This situation negatively impacts upon the growth & development of Maryland. What’s the cure?
8.       An estimated SIX HUNDRED THOUSAND UNITED STATES DOLLARS (US$600,000.00) was made available by the Liberian government as MONETARY REPARATION to Shipwreck victims. The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) through its former head, Hon. Harrison Karwea, Superintendent J. Gble-Bo Brown (now Senator) former Senator John Akel Ballout and Senator H. Dahn Morias FULLY paid the victims. THERE’S A NEED FOR AN AUDIT!
9.       What’s about MEDICAL and PSYCHOLOGICAL REPARATION for the victims? Will ever come?!
10.    Ritualistic killing is once more raising its ugly head. Each time one citizen dies, the entire nation is hit in the knee cap!
11.   The Cavalla Rubber Corporation (CRC) and Maryland Oil Palm Plantation (MOPP) reached a point when violence is imminent. If nothing significant is done to pay redundant and current employees as well as landowners their rightful dues, no telling what could unfold.
12.    The Fishtown/Harper Highway Project is experiencing serious glitches: erstwhile and imminent demolitions on private property in the city of Pleebo reached a disquieting and catastrophic dimension. If nothing is done by the Liberian government, The African Development Bank (ADB) will pull the pluck on the Project and the road will never be paved again for decades to come.
13.   Did The Ministry of Public Works hands-in-gloves with some local officials in Maryland rob private landowners their Rights and Legal Dues thereby engaging in corrupt practices?
14.   What happened to the THIRTY THOUSAND UNITED STATES DOLLARS for Radio Harper? We want to know? Can an audit be conducted by The Liberia General Auditing Commission (GAC)?
15.    Why is it that International Nongovernmental Organizations (INGOs) are hiring outside of Maryland? You mean chauffeurs, cooks, security companies, &c.?

These and many other things need to be addressed when President Sirleaf arrives in Maryland. Otherwise the proverbial bell that tolls will do so for too much that could go wrong!

BEDELL SPEAKS & WORKS Maryland Persons of the Year 2015

The following Marylanders have been selected by The Bedell Speaks & Works online blog column as distinct persons of the Year 2015. Please take your own time to read the claims with open mind.

When working out the details on writing this column one of my daughters said I should let everyone know that I gave up the financial world, cashed in the chips so to speak and went off to really live life with all its beauty exposed to me. Assuredly I had seen what economic enslavement is all about. Funny how you can learn to live on bread and butter when you really want to, when the reward is your soul's growth.

As beauty is diametrically opposite to ugly you can work out the math when I tell you that I have found, seen and lived things of such great beauty that a billionaire would trade places with me to have lived it; yet it is not for sale but is given freely to those that choose to awaken from within to be all that they can be.

My late Dad taught me that things are not always as they appear to be. God rest his soul (actually he is back as one of the twins) he took it all in good stride. So read on, learn what your soul wants you to know. 'Just because you do not believe that something is true does not mean it is not true'; that is until you prove or disprove it for yourself. If my sentences seem to get too long sometimes, known as run on, please forgive me and edit yourself, to what you believe it to mean, just remember that 'things are not always as they appear to be'.

This work is dedicated to all Marylanders, Edward Nagbe (the martyr volunteer) and to humanity, to you and you and you. May you find some light within and continue to live the joys of it all on your path to conscious enlightenment. In neuro-linguistics parlance, things can easily be mixed up in the sense that we can make ourselves mean what we want them to mean. Sort of our take on reality and thus make it mean this or that. So, please remember throughout this Article, that while trying to be explicit as possible, do not just take things to mean what you would like them to mean, try and understand the flavor of it and thus attain the true 'gnosis' of what is being said and thus meant. The 'gnosis' of it would be the 'higher, leaning towards, truth' of what is being accomplished by those we mentioned herein.  Feel the message in your heart as you read it with your mind. These are two processes that when joined within you allow you to really understand the 'total' meaning of our work.

Maryland County is situated deep in the belly and keyhole of the Southeastern Region of the Republic of Liberia. For this reason, like all other counties in the Southeast, it is marginalized. But thank God, its sons and daughters can rise up to the challenge to move her forward in terms of human resource and infrastructural development.

Amongst those sons and daughters of Maryland, there are a few who are chosen each year for their contributions and stances on issues in that year. The following represent the ones who were voted by Marylanders in the Diaspora and at home in Maryland.

ELIZABETH DAVIS RUSSELL Maryland woman of the Year 2015. She towered over all other Maryland women in her work and contributions to Maryland, yea Liberia. Dr. Russell partook in the establishment of The William V. S. Tubman University in Maryland County and since then became its President taking it from “nothing” to “something” placing it the legion of national and global universities. There was no indication the University would reach the point of development it has reached. Because, there was a belief that since it did not begin as an associate degree program and shooting straight to a four-year program, it would fail. Seven years ago, the University is only still standing, it is reaching noblest heights. The University is incomparable to any university in Liberia and elsewhere when it comes to students’ deportment and comportment. It is refined! Dr. Russell withstood the test of time to raise up the name of the University. To date, students are transported to and from class by buses owned and run by the University. This was then unimaginable! To date, it is as real as life itself. Having not resided in Liberia for quite too long, no one thought Dr. Russell would spend the next Evening in Maryland when she first arrived. More than six years gone, she’s still a trailblazer. Dr. Russell was initially misunderstood due to media hype. Those who did not trust her style of administration (no nonsense) and yet they trust her with their children at the University.

BHOFAL CHAMBERS Maryland Man of the Year 2015 is very principled. Through the passageway of life and in the course of human events, there are very few men who stand for principles and hold on to them even at the time when all seems unfruitful and uncertain. One of those men happens to be Dr. Bhofal Chambers, representative for Pleebo/Sodokeh District in the Liberia House of Representatives. Malcolm X once observed, “I have more respect for a man who lets me know where he stands, even if he's wrong, than the one who comes up like an angel and is nothing but a devil.

ALLEN N. YANCY Humanitarian of the Year 2015. His values transcend politics. He’s humanistic. This man committed class suicide years ago before the expression and principle reached my generation in Maryland. He is one of the great national redemptive heroes of our time. “AY” as he’s affectionately known, has a philosophy in life that transcends politics. Thus, he’s not a politician but a revolutionary. He sets his life on the foundation of Gandhi’s wise saying, “Be the change you want to see.” He is a peerless hero, a pious and God-fearing man and verily a manifestation of all the virtues of a born leader. Allen would like to see his people happy. So he stretches out his hand to everyone he can reach, irrespective of class, origin and association. There is no caste and religious discrimination in his life. Everyone has equal rights even if he were poor or rich. As Managing Director of the Liberia Sugar Company (LIBSUCO), he demonstrated his love for all. He stands for humanity, freedom, brotherhood and justice. He is a symbol of intelligence. Allen is a teacher. His teaching spreads peacefully. He is spiritual, nonviolent, loves peace and love for all creatures of God. We are blessed to have someone such as Allen N. Yancy, III.

JAMES ELLIOTT Diaspora Man of the Year 2015. James has been working feverishly in almost all Maryland organizations in the United States. One of the founding members of Marylanders for Progress (MFP), National Association of Maryland County of Liberia in The Americas (NAMCAL) and others. Currently, he’s investing in infrastructure and partly human resource development in Harper City and its environs.

MARY BAdDWEHAYENE SETON Legendary Market woman of the Year 2015. She has been a market woman since the 60s and still a market woman. Currently, she is the longest serving market woman in the Harper General Market. Besides her, the rest of her generation has passed on to the great beyond. She remains standing. This woman whether you believe it or not, is a living legendary woman. See, women power did not just begin. Unnoticeably it’s been around for centuries in our country. It isn’t about celebrity or popularity; it’s about influence. In some cases to figure out a woman’s contribution, analysis looked for those who run countries, big companies or influential nonprofits. Their rankings are a combination of two scores: visibility and the size of the organization or country they lead. Mary Seton has done none of the above. She is a pure African market woman. She’s intrigued by her surrounding, evidential circumstances to her life and community. She’s a Christian. She gave her life and heart to Jesus Christ and accepts her condition. She has exhibited traces of exquisite sensibility, soundness of understanding, and decision of character. She received no literary instructions. The pecuniary concerns of her life made her practiced rigid economy in her expenditures, and with her savings is enabled to procure her children’s academic education, to which without aid, they could not have had access to university education.

Rev. Dr. JAMES N. WILSON voted Diaspora Maryland leader of the Year 2015. Rev. Dr. Wilson is currently President of NAMCAL-USA. Born and reared in Harper City, Maryland County. Rev. Wilson is a visionary.

From time to time, many of us tend to experience an occasional insight which is simply the ability to change our filter and look at things differently.

In moments of insight, there's a sudden burst of clarity where there had previously been static; there is an epiphany of movement. It's the a-ha moment. When we are firmly entrenched in our beliefs and rooted in our certainty, some are not typically open to insights. Rev. Wilson has insight that makes him temporarily suspend his personal beliefs and open to new possibilities. He has been working feverishly hard to create the groundwork for it to come forth. In other words, he’s getting out of his own way, and opening to new considerations. Without insights we're shackled to a fixed and stagnating reality in which little changes. It tends to look as if life is just replaying itself, day in and day out. Rev. Wilson is a man with such marvelous insights as a leader.

ADAM GYUDE MOORE Maryland Youth of the Year 2015. He was elected in July, 2015, as First Vice President for administration of The Maryland Youth Association (MYA). The Election took place in Karlokeh, Karluway District of Maryland.

“A youth is a person who is going to carry on what you have started. He is going to sit where you are sitting and, when you are gone, attend to those things which you think are important. You may adopt all the policies you please, but how they will be carried out depends on him. He will assume control of your cities, states, and nation. He is going to move in and take over your churches, schools, universities, and corporations. The fate of humanity is in his hands. So it might be well to pay him some attention.”

Moore was able to apply himself progressively along with his immediate staff to convince the Local government of Maryland to allocate TWENTY-FIVE THOUSAND UNITED STATES DOLLARS for his youth organization. As far as known history can see, no youth achieved such to convince the County to ever allocate such an amount for youth development.

Gyude Moore won applause for his assertiveness and organizational skills. Besides, Gyude has been very instrumental in youth activities in the county including support for Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) activities throughout the county. Gyude is a sophomore student reading Agriculture at The Tubman University in Harper, Maryland County. His hobby include, sports, reading and debates. He loves Palm-Butter with kitty-lay, bitter roots, crab and good dry fish.

EDWARD NAGBE is voted volunteer martyr of our time. He led the charge to bring electricity to Maryland as a volunteer. He died as a volunteer. Without his volunteer contributions along with others, electricity would not have been a reality in Maryland. Isn’t it great to die for your country at the age of getting married? A brave man he was. Love him and a big salute to him. I He was a real HERO! As the record agent of the West African Power Pool and Liberia Electricity Corporation, Edward Nagbe has consistently demonstrated high moral and ethical standards. He was organized, highly dependable and took an effective systematic approach to solve issues or concerns. For more than three years, Edward volunteered his time to help establish electricity in Maryland and was instrumental in keeping development a key component of several programs within the process.

It is pathetic to see that Edward Nagbe doesn’t have a top place in our hearts. Let us not stop until Edward Nagbe has a colorful place in Maryland.

JOHN HILARY TUBMAN voted Maryland Businessman of the Year 2015. He is a young entrepreneur. Just like his late father, John Hilary Tubman who ran his father’s (Bor Willie) estate in Maryland, “Small” John or “John-John” as he is affectionately called, is making it happen in Montserrado County.

ROBERTA BROWN COOPER voted Diaspora Maryland Woman of the Year 2015. Roberta Brown Cooper has been in the vanguard in the formation of many Diaspora Maryland organization and has led some with flying colors.

PATRICK NUGBA Maryland Sports Official of the Year 2015. Patrick is entering his seventh year with the Maryland Sports and Athletic Commission.

IMMEDIATE RELEASE

As Lead Agency for Global Youth Service Day in Maryland, KNPIF will be celebrating the spirit of community and the value of our youth mobilizing over 1000 volunteers as they participate in this Year’s Annual Global Youth Service Day in Pleebo City, April 17 to 19.

Our mission is to operate volunteer programs around the county in partnership with sustainable community initiatives, bringing people together to work side-by-side while sharing perspectives and fostering cultural understanding.

KNPIF is a not-for-profit organization that has authored considerable peace within the Glebo Peninsula. Organized around the mission of strengthening individuals, family and communities, KNPIF is a dynamic multi-service organization serving a diverse population within the Peninsula spanning economic, ethnic, and cultural divisions. Our version of “Habitat for Humanity” is typical example.

We are implementing, developing and strengthening informal groups into mature community-based organizations, capable of maintaining and enhancing peace processes within their communities.

KNPIF believes in the value of home-grown solutions and that sustainable development begins with people and the ownership and realization of their ideas.  Any change and intervention must stand in organic relationship to what the people on the ground are already doing.

By encouraging them to develop their own models of community development, in conjunction with the services that KNPIF provides, these community organizations and their networks of women are able to scale up and replicate to feed, clothe and educate children. Listening and understanding, encouraging and focusing on strengths, responding and supporting appropriately have all helped KNPIF to develop, practice and refine our intervention.

We have received reports from teachers, children and community members which indicate increased participation in community development.

Fire In The Executive Mansion: We’re Not Going Mad, Are We?!

(Thomas Bedell, July 27, 2006)

It was just yesterday when I heard that the Executive Mansion, home of the President of the Republic, was on fire. I was in a celebration mood; not for the fire, but because Liberia was observing her 159th Independence Day Celebration. And there was too much drinking and eating going on. And so, I really didn’t pay much attention to the fire news.

One of the other reasons why I didn’t pay much attention is that Liberians are good at exaggerating news. So, I thought, they were exaggerating! Plus, I thought, if it were actually true, my thinking was, probably a piece of rug caught on fire from a cigarette. And so, I closed my mind on any possibility of a serious fire.

As usual, I got on the phone to wish others "HAPPY JULY 26!"

Then something strange happened: some of those I called were excited that fire engulfed the Mansion. Some of them wished President Sirleaf would have gotten burned. Others thought it was God’s way of letting her know, He disapproves of her presidency. Such negative views kept vibrating in my poor ears to a point where I thought ENOUGH was ENOUGH! I didn’t want to hear such anti-Liberia sentiments. So, I dropped the phone and took a seat to contemplate!

I appealed to myself to ignore all the negative views. And encouraged myself to think that this wasn’t true. I wanted to think it was a dream. But something kept telling me that this is real life and we have to face the reality: There are some people who are positive and there are others who are negative! But then the situation seemed to be getting worse. That’s when I tuned into the Ulibsaafroum; I mean the University of Liberia Alumni Association LISTSERV where some of us express our opinions no matter how strong and weak they are.

On that LISTSERV, a certain young man sent in an e-note just in time when I plucked into the system. He embraced the news with joy that the Mansion was on fire. He implied that it was okay for President Sirleaf. Because, according to him, this is exactly what President Sirleaf always wanted -  to “level” the Mansion. In his opinion, President Sirleaf got her wish – the Mansion was burning and it would be leveled soon.

Right there and then, I knew this wasn’t a dream and I could not pretend anymore that it wasn’t happening! Suddenly, my heart splattered into pieces. My heart broke because I was looking at our future from what people were saying and thinking! These people do not have good minds for our country! And I just couldn’t believe that we have some Liberians who are vicious that much.

 I couldn’t escape it anymore!

I was deeply concerned. I had to face the proverbial bull in the eye! So, I visited my favorite online Liberian news organ - FrontPageAfrica.com. When I got there, I was spellbound! I saw the front of the Mansion ablaze! And then my entire demeanor drastically underwent serious change.
A 21st century state-of-the-art architectural work was now burning while some Liberians who are owners of this real estate, were jubilating, as if it had nothing to do with their very being.

Is it that some Liberians have gone so mad so much so they would celebrate the burning of their Executive Mansion?

Are we that mad so much so that we wish evil on our nation and our President?

Is it that because some Liberians have not invested anything in the country so much so they really don’t care whether or not the nation burns?

What actually is occurring in the minds of those who jubilate because the Mansion is on fire? Are they the same ones who are responsible for the break down of our country during the war? If so, what manner of people are they, so that they celebrate when one of their compatriots or national endowment falls?

Do we not know that without our country we are nothing but illegal aliens gallivanting the corridors of other people’s country? What evidence is there that those who were celebrating for the burning of the Mansion will undergo any change in respect to their views about their country and its people?

Whatever the answers will be to these salient questions, we need to check ourselves. Otherwise, we are going to wreck ourselves and wreck the nation that our Fore parents sacrificed to build, so we can have a place that we can call home!

I know I have my own pitfalls, misgivings and biases, but never will I celebrate or wish death and evil upon my worst enemy. I did not support President Sirleaf during the elections, but upon her election as President of the Republic, the people made their wishes known when they spoke! And when a people speak, God speaks! For the voice of the people is the voice of God! So I give President Sirleaf my unconditional patriotic support, no matter how much I may disagree with some of her policies, she is my President! And on my honor, I promise to do my best to help my country and my people!

I encourage all Liberians to do the same. Because, if we hate one another and destroy our country, let us make no mistake about it; we will be destroying ourselves and our children’s future! So, let’s join hands together at this moment of trial and tribulation to work in unity and make a difference on our country!

 HAPPY, HAPPY, JULY 26!

Letter To The Maryland Legislative Caucus On The County-Sitting

SOCIAL JUSTICE ADVOCATE

August 2, 2016

To:

Maryland Legislative Caucus
Capitol Building
Republic of Liberia

Dear Honorable Gentlemen:

I trust you are enjoying God’s grace and doing well with your varied responsibilities.

I'm sure you are aware of the pain of our county’s economic crisis that is being felt everywhere, including homes and schools of your constituents in Maryland.

That is why we urgently need your help.

As a constituent, and a parent, taxpayer, community member and a social justice advocate who won relief and reparation for our citizenry, I am asking you to support The County-Sitting to discuss and adequately appropriate the ONE MILLION UNITED STATES DOLLARS of County Development Fund that is supposedly sitting in escrow while the entire County and people wallow in financial despair.

Since 2005 up to present, Maryland County has continuously suffered immeasurable budgetary problems beyond description due to internal wrangling within the Caucus.

If this internal wrangling continues, Honorable Gentlemen, it will surely hurt the students and our innocent youths who suffer through loss of programs and scholarship opportunities.

For example, at a time when our children, students and youths are expected to achieve at higher levels than ever before, we cannot afford to dismantle our quality programs. Our children and youths deserve more than just a bare-bone education; they deserve rich and varied educational opportunities that will help them succeed and compete globally. Without relief from you all, these kids may not get that chance. If the internal wrangling in the Caucus continues undiminished and there is no County-Sitting very soon at which time funding can be made available for development programs, even more opportunities for our children, youths and county will be lost.

We urge you to seek the hosting of the County-Sitting very shortly. Maryland County, its students, youths, and schools need your help now to make sure that our schools and students get the funding they need to provide the best education possible for them and for the development of the County.

Can we count on you to please speak with your fellow legislators and take the necessary bold steps to ensure that internal wrangling in the Caucus no longer be allowed to undercut quality education and development in Maryland County?

As a member of our civil society, especially the revolutionary sector, there are other constitutional and democratic ways and means to compel our leaders to act which includes and not limited to protest demonstrations, refusal to pay taxes, to vote and to rebel against injustice, but for the sake of human decency and civility and the progress of our county and youths, protests and demonstrations are not the best way, unless we have no other alternative.

Thank you for considering our concerns. We look forward to talking with you personally on this issue and seeing you in Maryland at the County-Sitting very soon. I am,

Respectfully Yours,

Thomas G. Bedell

Splits Among Liberians Are Not New, Only The End-Results Are Different!

(Thomas Bedell, January 17, 2007)

They say history to a people is what a mother is to a child. And the past is a kaleidoscope of promises, failures, victories and embarrassments.

The history of Liberia in terms of nation building must be used as a guide-post in moving her into the 21st Century in terms of human resource and infrastructural development.

The idea of splits in the Liberian society is nothing new. What is new is the end-result that comes with each split. In Liberia, the end-results of splits have not been an encouraging trend. They’ve scathed our people for far too long.

Just for few examples, in 1985, heavyweight politicians converged in Liberia to form an alliance. But due to mistrust, it ended up in a split. In the end, Samuel Doe, whom they called a “dictator,” ended up winning the Presidential election. From thereon, the stage for generalized anarchy of violence was set. Liberia became a “house” on fire!

In the same 1985 another incident took place again that crowned the story of splits.

When all political attempts failed to remove Doe, Gen. Quiwonkpa and some political heavyweights launched a military offensive. When they arrived in Sierra Leone, for whatever reason, a split developed in their ranks. So, when Quiwonkpa momentarily overthrew Doe, he met with failure. And Doe reemerged and re-seized power. As a consequential result, Quiwonkpa was arrested, humiliated and bludgeoned to death along with others. That particular event in the country shifted violence into high gear.

Then 1989 marked another split.

Charles Taylor, with the help of some Liberian political-heavyweights, organized the most vicious, bloodiest and all-time military offensive against Doe. Just when the offensive gained momentum, for obvious reasons, a split developed in the military offensive. And the group broke into two. Later on the split became three.

1990 was another date when the “All Liberian Conference” convened in Atlanta, Georgia with a split.

A split developed in The All Liberian Conference. One group desired the immediate dissolution of The Union of Liberian Associations in the Americas (ULAA). On the other side, the desire for ULAA to live on became absolute. Both sides clashed. In an effort to compromise, all else failed. Soon, the impasse was transformed into the birth of The All Liberian Conference of North America. It was hoping to be a new Diasporic organization to replace ULAA. But in the end, Diasporic Liberians were plunged into a state of confusion. ULAA on one side and the new organization on the other side fussing and fighting. The situation lasted for a protracted period of time leaving both groups and Diasporic Liberians scathed.

Then came 1995.

The war had already taken a severe toll on the nation – tens and tens of thousands of innocent citizens perished in the chilling waters of national quagmire. To heal the wounds, democratic elections were called. Again, as was in the case of 1985, political heavyweights came together to form an alliance to make it impossible for Taylor to take power. As was in the past, the alliance failed. And Taylor won a landslide Presidential election. He became President. Thereafter, the stage was set for the collapse of constitutional and democratic state.

And then comes 2004.

Liberians in the Diaspora convene another “All Liberian National Conference.” This time in the DC Metro Area, USA. The intent was to help usher in a new, sound and civilian democratic leadership in the country during the 2005 elections. But for obvious reasons again, a split appeared in the Conference. Soon, there were two groups. Each registered under the corporate laws of USA as two separate legal entities. Like the current House of Representatives in Liberia, these two groups convened separate conferences in two separate cities. In the end, both groups lose sight of the initial intent and became monuments of decay. To date, besides their Articles of Incorporation, both groups have become a ghostly illusion.

There was another split in 2005.

The war was over and the nation and the world were felt-up. So, another Presidential election was arranged. This time, tens and tens of candidates emerged to vie for the presidency. Liberians were war-fatigued. But were forced into another difficult situation - choosing from dozens and dozens of candidates. As was the case in the past, political heavyweights split in the middle again. So another alliance fell apart. In the end, the people were forced to elect a Congress and other leaders to power who had no clue of their respective duties to the Liberian state, people and constituents.

Considering all the above, the current split in The House of Representatives cannot, by any stretch of anyone’s imagination, be an accident. It was bound to occur. But what should concern all of us is the end-result. Will the result help to educate members of the House to be statesmen and women or drive them more into useless strife? Whatever the answer is, will depend on what comes out of the split.

Unless Liberians rid themselves of colonial mentality and begin to work in the sole interest of their children’s future, there will always be splits and the end-results will be catastrophic!
