GUIDED DEMOCRACY FOR AFRICAN COUNTRIES (The Benefits of Benevolent Dictatorship) Delivered on February 24, 2007 By Dr. Ozidi Thomas Osuji

April 10, 2007

CONCLUSION

I personally do not like anyone tell me what to do. When it comes to social policy making, I want all of us to put our heads together and discuss what we are going to do, what is good for us. I am a democrat. My preference for democratic policy making process notwithstanding, I am acutely aware that if you want law and order that the forms of government are the best means for attaining them… Whereas democracy and capitalism are, no doubt, the best forms of government, especially if freedom is our goal, the fact of the matter is that a continent like Africa where people are making transition from preliterate to modern society, there are a lot of disruptions in people’s lives. People are lost and do not know what to do. They live in a state of anomie and many are attempted to believe that they can do whatever they want to do and get away with it.

It is true that one can steal and get away with it. But suppose all people steal then what happens? Chaos results.

I want to transform Africans into a law abiding people; I want to modernize Africa, to bring her economically to where Europe is. I want to do so in a generation. I believe that benevolent dictatorship is the quickest means of attaining my goals.

If you have better ideas please persuade me with them, I am all ears. In fact, I would that you have persuasive ideas for, clearly, my position shows loss of faith in my fellow Africans. It is not exactly good for one to lose faith in ones people’s ability to do the right thing and come to believe that they need a dictator to make them do the right thing. This is awful perception of one's people and one certainly would rather not have such a negative view of one's people. Nor is this negative view merely ones, many Africans are of the same opinion.

It is not the case that one lost faith in one's self and project what one sees in one's self to other Africans and come to believe that they are not good enough and are not able to govern themselves. I would like to believe that Africans are capable of governing themselves.

I want you to show me how Africans can govern themselves, but do not give me excuses as to why, so far, they have not been able to govern themselves right. I do not want to read all the rethreaded neocolonial argument; one read those in graduate school but one is now disabused by actual relationship with Africans in positions of power. One has seen how easily corruptible Africans are.

One has no need to blame others, particularly white persons, for ones problems; one takes responsibility for ones problems and just wants to learn how to fix them. If one points two accusatory fingers at other people three point right back at one. This means that whereas other people do contribute to ones problems that one's own contribution is greater than others contribution to it. If you have ideas on how to fix African problems let us hear about them, but please do not blame others for Africa’s problems, that is now an old tale and One has no need to blame others, particularly white persons, for ones problems; one takes responsibility for ones problems and just wants to learn how to fix them. It is time that Africans grew up; growing up means taking responsibility for ones fate.

*This paper is an exercise in political theory, in philosophizing about what type of government suits a particular people, at a particular point in time. The reader, hopefully, is acquainted with political philosophy and is able to think the subject through. The writer’s thesis is academic and is meant for intellectual discourse; it should not be taken as a dogmatic assertion of what is good for Africa and Africans.

Dr Osuji presented this paper to a live audience.

PERSONAL NOTE: My personal opinion is forthcoming on Dr. Osuji’s paper of benevolent dictatorship as it relates to “Guided Democracy For African Countries.”

If I Were George M. Weah, The President-Elect of Liberia

January 11, 2018

by now I would be having my own transitional committee working alongside one that is set up by the outgoing President to ascertain and verify all information provided to me from the outgoing.

For you see, there are three ways of doing things: The Right way; The Wrong way; And The Liberian Way!

The Liberian way supersedes currently.

Outgoing government officials are stripping the Government of everything including and not limited to money, furniture, records, motor cars &c. If this continues, the new government will paralyze before it comes in.

My designees would be available and by now working with all outgoing government officials making sure everything is in place and others are talking to possible appointees and softening the ground before I officially take office.

Anything in the contrary is nothing but anarchy!

This is my opinion! What’s yours?

UNITY: A Civil Culture of Winner & Loser – Political Ramifications

I’ve played great ball in my time on the highest level in Liberia. I also played in other African countries and America, Interestingly, I feel not often fascinated with European ballgames as my colleagues do when they go from video-club-to-video club alarming and blowing out their tonsils.

In soccer or should I say football, not necessarily by the double shovels and the samba like dances of one of my icons who is no more on the European scene, Ronaldhino; with his constant smiles as he taps the ball with his underfoot to fascinate even his arch rivals or the celebratory dances and other spectacular displays of players. This is not to suggest that those things don't really move me anymore. No! Indeed they do! Because I did them too. But I did them better! Besides, some things intrigue me mostly. That’s the manner in which the winning team and loser behave after the match. They shake hands, pat each other on the backs, or exchange sweaty jerseys. Both teams are good teams but one got to win or one has already won. It is this virtue of the game I admire most. Just patting the back of the winner or the one that did not win and say: "good game or thanks for the win." That’s what we call “Good sportsmanship!”

I wish Maryland politics would evolve like the ballgame. The party that did not win will graciously say: "you've won, thank you" and the victor will be humble enough to acknowledge the effort and strength of the opponent and say: " you are such a good competitor, thank you." I’m sure, we’ll be a lot better off. Our children will learn good characters and exhibit good statesmanship even if they are not good athletes.

Our leaders must learn from the sports we enjoy watching and exhibit the virtue of sportsmanship. Leaders or wannabe leaders should learn this as we go into politics of nationbuilding. Learning to cultivate such virtues for the sake of ourselves and others is the right thing to do.

Since the last Special Senatorial Election of December, 2014, winners and non-winners alike have distanced themselves from each other for reasons best known to each. I think this is wrong!

Chambers and Gble-Bo in court; Morias and Chambers in an impasse; Biney hanky-pankys; and Blalu, missing in action. Devoid of egotistic pageantry, can they all work together and help us beat all odds and save succeeding generations from the scourge of war?!

You tell me!1

Fire In The Executive Mansion: We’re Not Going Mad, Are We?!

(Thomas Bedell, July 27, 2006)

It was just yesterday when I heard that the Executive Mansion, home of the President of the Republic, was on fire. I was in a celebration mood; not for the fire, but because Liberia was observing her 159th Independence Day Celebration. And there was too much drinking and eating going on. And so, I really didn’t pay much attention to the fire news.

One of the other reasons why I didn’t pay much attention is that Liberians are good at exaggerating news. So, I thought, they were exaggerating! Plus, I thought, if it were actually true, my thinking was, probably a piece of rug caught on fire from a cigarette. And so, I closed my mind on any possibility of a serious fire.

As usual, I got on the phone to wish others "HAPPY JULY 26!"

Then something strange happened: some of those I called were excited that fire engulfed the Mansion. Some of them wished President Sirleaf would have gotten burned. Others thought it was God’s way of letting her know, He disapproves of her presidency. Such negative views kept vibrating in my poor ears to a point where I thought ENOUGH was ENOUGH! I didn’t want to hear such anti-Liberia sentiments. So, I dropped the phone and took a seat to contemplate!

I appealed to myself to ignore all the negative views. And encouraged myself to think that this wasn’t true. I wanted to think it was a dream. But something kept telling me that this is real life and we have to face the reality: There are some people who are positive and there are others who are negative! But then the situation seemed to be getting worse. That’s when I tuned into the Ulibsaafroum; I mean the University of Liberia Alumni Association LISTSERV where some of us express our opinions no matter how strong and weak they are.

On that LISTSERV, a certain young man sent in an e-note just in time when I plucked into the system. He embraced the news with joy that the Mansion was on fire. He implied that it was okay for President Sirleaf. Because, according to him, this is exactly what President Sirleaf always wanted -  to “level” the Mansion. In his opinion, President Sirleaf got her wish – the Mansion was burning and it would be leveled soon.

Right there and then, I knew this wasn’t a dream and I could not pretend anymore that it wasn’t happening! Suddenly, my heart splattered into pieces. My heart broke because I was looking at our future from what people were saying and thinking! These people do not have good minds for our country! And I just couldn’t believe that we have some Liberians who are vicious that much.

 I couldn’t escape it anymore!

I was deeply concerned. I had to face the proverbial bull in the eye! So, I visited my favorite online Liberian news organ - FrontPageAfrica.com. When I got there, I was spellbound! I saw the front of the Mansion ablaze! And then my entire demeanor drastically underwent serious change.
A 21st century state-of-the-art architectural work was now burning while some Liberians who are owners of this real estate, were jubilating, as if it had nothing to do with their very being.

Is it that some Liberians have gone so mad so much so they would celebrate the burning of their Executive Mansion?

Are we that mad so much so that we wish evil on our nation and our President?

Is it that because some Liberians have not invested anything in the country so much so they really don’t care whether or not the nation burns?

What actually is occurring in the minds of those who jubilate because the Mansion is on fire? Are they the same ones who are responsible for the break down of our country during the war? If so, what manner of people are they, so that they celebrate when one of their compatriots or national endowment falls?

Do we not know that without our country we are nothing but illegal aliens gallivanting the corridors of other people’s country? What evidence is there that those who were celebrating for the burning of the Mansion will undergo any change in respect to their views about their country and its people?

Whatever the answers will be to these salient questions, we need to check ourselves. Otherwise, we are going to wreck ourselves and wreck the nation that our Fore parents sacrificed to build, so we can have a place that we can call home!

I know I have my own pitfalls, misgivings and biases, but never will I celebrate or wish death and evil upon my worst enemy. I did not support President Sirleaf during the elections, but upon her election as President of the Republic, the people made their wishes known when they spoke! And when a people speak, God speaks! For the voice of the people is the voice of God! So I give President Sirleaf my unconditional patriotic support, no matter how much I may disagree with some of her policies, she is my President! And on my honor, I promise to do my best to help my country and my people!

I encourage all Liberians to do the same. Because, if we hate one another and destroy our country, let us make no mistake about it; we will be destroying ourselves and our children’s future! So, let’s join hands together at this moment of trial and tribulation to work in unity and make a difference on our country!

 HAPPY, HAPPY, JULY 26!

Let Ellen Speak! So What?

(Wed, 6 Apr 2005)

Throw dirt at others and you deprive the earth of soil. Pull dirt from the earth with your hands and you develop dirty hands! Pollute the air and you'll suffocate yourself! Poison the soil and you'll damage your life! Contaminate the water and you'll destroy your soul! Murder each other and you'll depopulate the earth!

So, if Ellen wants to speak, LET ELLEN SPEAK! If ULAA wants Ellen to speak, LET ELLEN SPEAK! Whether or not Nihilistic politicians want Ellen to speak, LET ELLEN SPEAK! If money mongers want Ellen to speak, LET ELLEN SPEAK! If degree "thieves" don't want Ellen to speak, Let ELLEN SPEAK! If you are a God "chosen" one and don’t want Ellen to speak, I SAY, LET MA ELLEN SPEAK! Whether or not she has anything good to say, it makes no difference! The damage is done! SO, JUST LET ELLEN SPEAK!

Did she say, "Destroy Liberia?" Or

Does she hold dual citizenship? And,

Did you say she's an "oldie"?

WHATEVER THE CASE MAY BE, LET HER SPEAK!

If Clyde & Bunny can speak, DAMMIT, THE "IRON LADY" CAN SPEAK TOO!

Notice, war lords have spoken here before and so is Amos Sawyer when he called for a "revolution!" SO WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL? CAN ELLEN SPEAK TOO?!

If Yakpawollo and General bitter-leaf can speak, SO CAN SHE!

Our Founding Fathers gave us a Free Nation and Freedom! YOU AND I HAVE THE RIGHT TO SPEAK, SO IS ELLEN! Does it matter who the heck Ellen is? Does it matter she called President Doe an "Idiot" causing her to flee into hiding along with Dr. Sawyer? FOR GOD'S SAKE, LET THE WOMAN SPEAK!

I don't think she can speak whirlwind, thunder, Tsunami flood and fire! Can she? THEN IN THE NAME OF THE GOD OF AFRICA, LET THE OLD LADY SPEAK!

Call her "Iron lady, plastic lady, wooden lady, zinc lady" and whatever you may! BUT LET HER SPEAK! Reagan said "Mikhail Gobarchov tear down those walls!" And the Berlin wall came tumbling down.  What did Ellen say? "Level the Land?" And did it happen? Yes! Charlie "leveled" the land! And lives tumbled down! Blood ran across the land like River Gee! BUT IF SHE WANTS TO, LET HER SPEAK!

When women weep for their children, Ellen understands! She's a woman too! Ain't she? If the "Iron Lady" gave orders to "level the country," then let the "struggle" continue! BUT LET HER SPEAK!

Wreckage describes the nation! For it is ripped apart at the seam. BEFORE ELLEN FALLS APART, LET HER SPEAK!
Is there anything new to say? In fact, is there anything left to say about a fallen nation which goes from grace to disgrace?! What is our excuse to our FOUNDING FATHERS? "Forgive us our stupidity and bankruptcy?"

The nation is ruined!

And we are considered a failure!

Women do wrong too! For the evil they do will also live after them! So, let Ellen's "evil" be interned with her bones! If she speaks, will there be locust in the land?! Or will crops not grow? THEN DAMMIT, LET THE OLD LADY SPEAK! 50 grand is a lot! Did she pay that to speak? I don't know! And you don't know! For the evidence must have preponderance! JUST LET HER SPEAK!

Ellen did this! Ellen did that! Ellen said this and Ellen said that! Where are the vital statistics? Where are the mega themes? And Where is the blueprint? JUST LET ELLEN SPEAK! FOR OLD AGE WAITS FOR NO ONE! Ellen's Judgment Day is at the Ballot Box, come October 2005! For the race will not be up to the swift. But up to those who endure!"

SO, PLEASE LET ELLEN JOHNSON SIRLEAF SPEAK! AND HEAR WHAT SHE HAS TO SAY TO GOD AND MAN! PEACE!

MOVEMENT FOR THE HISTORIC PRESERVATION OF MARYLAND SITES

Monrovia, Liberia
CELL: +231.886.920.151/886.747.426
______________________________________________________________________

upcoming emergency meeting of marylanders
July 14, 2013

STATEMENT of PURPOSE

Dr. John Henrique Clarke once observed, “History to a people is what a mother is to her child.” The history of Maryland must be preserved for obvious historical reasons.

Recently, the Ministry of Public Works demolished private properties in Pleebo City as a “street expansion project.” Similar exercise is pending in Harper City.

The disturbing news has captured the attention and deepest concern of Marylanders everywhere necessitating an All-Important Emergency Meeting on Saturday, August 3, 2013, 2pm at the G. W. Gibson High School Auditorium, Capitol-Bye-Pass.

One of the reasons constituting this meeting is to express our profound support for our Heritage and Values in places that reflect our History as a people out of the sacrifices of our Forefathers and mothers.

This Meeting will help to make a case of national development and preservation of history!

The Meeting will develop a single and profound approach to influence Government’s decision in this respect. Because by law, the people have a voice when a project involving government action, approval, or funding may affect properties that qualify as Historic Places.

The Meeting will charge a committee with historic preservation leadership in Maryland so as to design an approach how to respectfully raise our concerns to the Government. It will promote preservation, enhancement and productive use of Maryland’s historic resources. The committee will advise the Superintendent and Congress on historic preservation policy. It will designate, preserve, protect, enhance, and perpetuate those sites, structures, objects, and districts which reflect outstanding elements of Maryland’s cultural, artistic, social, ethnic, economic, political, architectural, historic, technological, institutional or other heritage; and  will establish a method to draw a reasonable balance between the protection of historic properties and the County’s unique historic character and Central Government’s development projects by creating a quasi-judicial commission that will review, and approve or discourage any proposed demolition of, moving of or alteration to property of historic value in Maryland.

Compensation for properties already demolished in Pleebo by Government will also top the agenda.
