Letter To Supt. Betsy Kuoh-Toe On Behalf Of Electric Volunteers

January 29, 2015

Betsy Kuoh Toe
SUPERINTENDENT
Maryland County
Republic of Liberia

Dear Madam:

I trust you are enjoying God’s grace and doing well with your varied responsibilities!

This letter is two-fold: First, to congratulate you on your historic preferment as the second female and first citizen of Barrobo to become superintendent of Maryland County since 1857. Second, to follow-up and formalize a complaint I discussed with you in your office on January 21, 2015. Several citizens and residents of Maryland retained my service to advocate, represent their interests and negotiate in their behalf an amicable settlement in a misunderstanding between them and The Cross Border Electrification Project under the watchful eye and management of The Liberia Electric Corporation (LEC).

Madam Superintendent, my clients duly informed me that they have not been fairly treated by their recruiters and therefore seek a redress and/or response.

Based on my clients’ complaint, they are divided into two separate groups:

The first group includes those who were recruited in 2011. In this group, some of the individuals served as pole planters and wiring technicians while others served as trainers and consultants for the Electric Company during this period under review.

The second group includes those who were recruited in 2013 from various towns and villages surrounding Harper City as pole planters and wiring technicians (please see attached letters from General Town Chiefs).

According to my clients, all of them, prior to engaging field work, attended a three-month training program which qualified them for the job. Based on our clients’ complaint, the Electric Company did not have its own trainers. As such, I am told, some of our clients who are well-trained electricians by education and profession, previously trained at their own expense, have served and are still serving as trainers free-of-charge with a promise from the recruiters for future employment and stipend.

My clients have one story and one interest:

They were recruited by Messrs. Joseph Leay and Joseph Dahn in 2011 and 2013 respectively. According to them, they were recruited to serve in the capacity as volunteers with a promise to be employed at the completion of a three- month work period. The second group claims it was recruited with the consent of their town chiefs (please see attached letters). My clients also informed me that the three months volunteer service that was agreed upon was completed. But they were told to continue with a promise of future employment. But up to the minute we opine, my clients have been working assiduously hard for the past three unbroken years conducting training, planting poles and wiring poles throughout the Harper District without any compensation, whatsoever. And that troubles them!

My clients also informed me that during this period under review, they insisted to be fed during hard labor field and office work. But they were denied.

In October, 2014, my clients tell me that working materials used on the field were depleted. So field work could not continue. But Mr. Joseph Dahn (who understandably represents the interests of the Electric Company), instructs them to report to work a five-day week schedule  ( Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday & Friday) until materials arrive. As we opine, my clients tell me, they are currently reporting to work each and every day (five days a week) at the Head Office adjacent the Catholic Covent from 8am to 4pm. Although, there’s no work to be done at the Head office, my clients tell me, the threat to terminate their service and disrupt possible future employment hangs over them. As such, they are currently complying with the five-day work authorization.

On January 22, 2015, I personally spoke with Mr. Henry Lewis, Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) liaison officer in Monrovia to ascertain the facts. Upon inquiry, Mr. Lewis duly informed me by way of cell phone that, to his knowledge, there’s not a single soul that works in Maryland County under the Cross Border Electrification project known as “volunteers.” He also added during the phone discussion that there’s no LEC office and representative in the entire Maryland County. In our cell phone discussion, Mr. Lewis inquired from me as to who recruited these individuals. I informed him, as per my clients, Messrs. Joseph Leay and Joseph Dahn were the recruiters. Besides knowing Mr. Leay, Mr. Lewis tells me that he does not know of any Joseph Dahn in Maryland. He emphatically stated that there is no one in Maryland who has any authority from LEC to recruit. Therefore, according to Mr. Lewis, if anyone has recruited any volunteer, it is not up to LEC’s knowledge. I then asked Mr. Lewis, after three unbroken years, if he has not heard or known about a sizeable number of Maryland citizens and residents performing such tasks as planting light poles and electrifying. His response was in the negative. After all was said and done, Mr. Lewis advised I issue a letter of complaint to the LEC Management in Monrovia for redress.

Madam Superintendent, having heard from Mr. Lewis and considering his denial, we cannot but be troubled both in mind and soul. Our citizens and residents, who have continued to pull themselves by their own boots strap to feed their families, pay their children’s school fees and have complied with the prescribed work ethics to achieve their full human conditions, have their lives now hanging in the balance.

This being the case, Madam Superintendent, we do hereby appeal to your honorable offices and as mother of the county and its chief executive to help us find an amicable resolution to this matter. An amicable resolution that we desire is a win-win situation. Our clients want to benefit and we also want the Electric Company to benefit as well as Maryland. In the absence of an amicable settlement, litigation is a last resort!

Therefore, Madam Superintendent, we hereby seek an audience with you at your earliest convenience.

May God bless the work of your hands! I am,

Yours truly,

Genocide In Maryland (Liberia) By UNHCR?

The 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (known as the "Genocide Convention") under The United Nations defines genocide as any of the following acts:

1.       killing member (s) of a group;
2.       causing serious bodily or mental harm to member (s) of the group;
3.       deliberately inflicting on the group the conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or part;
4.       imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;
5.       forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.

The Convention confirms that genocide, whether committed in time of peace or war, is a crime under international law which parties to the Convention undertake "to prevent and to punish." The primary responsibility to prevent and stop genocide lies with the State in which this crime is committed.

On November 29, 2017, a truck, approximately two tones heavy, fully owned and operated by The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), drove over a kid’s lower body and damaged his pelvis in Harper, Maryland County, Republic of Liberia. The chauffeur fled the accident scene and left the kid profusely bleeding in the middle of the road at 8pm on that fateful Evening in no man’s land.

Since then, UNHCR has been running from justice. The Police’s effort to have UNHCR comply with the Traffic Laws of Liberia has been riding on slippery ground. Both UNHCR and its insurance company are on the run committing a serious violation of The UN Convention on Genocide.

After a one-week stay at the J. J. Dossen Memorial Hospital in Harper, the doctor recommended the kid be taken out of Maryland for further medical treatment since there is no expert at the Hospital to treat him.

At our own financial expense, the kid was flown to Monrovia. He’s currently in severe pain. From all indications, if nothing is done soon, he may not have kids at all in his lifetime. To date, consequent of the accident, the kid’s life has dramatically changed with mental and emotional distress. Nothing will be the same for him anymore. He’s out of school now due to his medical condition. His poor mother is in tears as the situation seems hopeless for her son. Having not lived in Monrovia, he is without food.

We submitted the matter to the senior senator of Maryland County, Amb. H. Dan Morias. He was deeply disturbed by this act of attempted genocide by UNHCR. As such, he promised to write the UN for its agency to take responsibility for such acts.

We use this medium to call on all Marylanders at home and abroad, Liberians and progressive mankind and the Media to help this kid get justice. We will accept food and clothing for him. Please contact us at the following numbers: +231.886.920.151/880.226.566.

7 Reasons Why Winston Tubman Should Be The Next Foreign Minister

1. He's a seasoned and well-experienced diplomat.

2. He's currently the only Liberian who has worked for Liberia the longest in United Nations and global circles with requisite academic education and contacts.

3. He has the global reputation to put this current Liberian government in good circles and hands in the comity of nations and win their unflinching support.

4. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf punished him for twelve years without employment simply because he endorsed George Weah in the 2005 Runoff Presidential election and that he averred that the time had come for Weah and the CDC to lead this nation.

5. Because it is Winston who told Ellen that when Weah and the young are given power, they would need guidance in order for them to be successful in the nation building process.

6. Winston believes in Weah and the CDC's ability to lead this country with the guidance of the experienced ones. As such, he became Standard Bearer and supported CDC's boycott of the 2011 Presidential Runoff election when it became glaring that Ellen had rigged the Election. They shot at Winston in an assassination attempt. Winston's bodyguard died.

7. Winston's commitment and dedication to CDC is IMMEASURABLE, UNQUESTIONABLE, and INCOMPARABLE!

4 Reasons Why Weah Won't Reside in The Executive Mansion As President:

1st, President William R. Tolbert, Jnr. who replaced the man who constructed the Mansion (official residence of the President) in his capacity as President, H. E. William Vacanarat Shadrach Tubman, temporarily resided in the Building and vacated it for whatever reason(s).

2nd, After Tolbert, the next President was Samuel K. Doe. He too took temporary residence and vacated.

3rd, The next President after Doe was Charles Taylor. He too resided in the Building temporarily.

4th, and more recent is Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the first elected female President. She too temporarily resided in the Building.

Now, the next President is H. E. George Weah. If all of the above Presidents who were more seasoned in Politics and of age and wisdom than Weah didn’t reside in the official residence of the President, what other evidence is there that Weah can reside in the Building as the official residence and office of the President? Virtually none

I'm Not Photogenic: A True Confession!

See, I probably will be one of those who will be forgotten in history. But am trying very hard so it won't happen.

The main reason why I think so is because I'm always striving to be one of a kind in my generation by trying to be unique and completely different from others by the way I do things.
Even though it is a very difficult task to do things differently in a society where everyone's views are locked in exactly the same direction, but am working feverishly hard to make some strides.
In our society, one will note with seriousness that, if you don't comply to certain accepted standards of behaviour, you're either considered "crazy" or something else far from "normalcy." It happened in school days. When you are too outspoken amongst your colleagues, the Faculty brands you as "rude" student.

I kinda fit that category -"crazy" and "rude." But there's a thin line between genius and crazy. It's revolutionary!

A man whom I've known from my formative days in Liberia and met in the USA, now a former instructor of Tubman University, recently confirmed this concept. He lashed out at me in the public for no apparent reason other than not complying with those standards such as, hanging out in the bars, drinking and chasing girls everyday and night, living a lavish life and bragging of personal achievements.

Those things are not my style and outside the life I have chosen to live! Am striving to be great and not to be merely successful! For there's a big difference! Am in a nation building mode. And that's revolutionary!

I've not been photogenic! So I do not parade the corridors of photo bonear. As such, many of my FACEBOOK friends and others query me. But am glad they know am not against photo taking. It's lovely! In fact, each time I see these beautiful fb ladies posing, am moved and fascinated by the ambiance and beauty! But am sorry I do not take photos as many would like me to! It's just me. And I just can't help it.

This also has a political reason. But that's another topic for another time.
The fact is, in my lifetime, I've taken very few photos.

There are cases where I should have taken photos, but I didn't!

For example, when I played ball for The Mighty Barrole First Division Ball Club in Liberia.
Another case is when I played ball on The Lone Star of Liberia - the nation's ball club. I took no photos.

So if I told you that I featured on those Ball Clubs and you asked for photo evidence, none will be obviously available.

I am one of the only Liberian ballers to have ever flown in a helicopter landing in the Antoinette Tubman Ball Park since the history of balling in the country. It was in preparation of a ballgame. We flew along with the President of the nation, H. E. Samuel K. Doe, from James Spriggs Aero Port in Monrovia. I took no photos also.

Another case is in 2006, I cosponsored a "Thank You! " Event for former president of The Union of Liberian Associations in the America's (ULAA), H. E. Roberta Rashid. Liberians came to that function in the tens. And it was just to see me in person in Pittsburgh. Prior to that, many of them thought I was handicapped. For years, most of them never saw me in person, except to read my mind-boggling and provoking authorship. At the end of the Event, they saw me. But strangely indeed, they were disappointed. I wasn't handicapped. I was on the floor dancing like a sailor! No photos again!
So folks, I know some of you will understand and agree with me: I don't have the time to do many things my age group will do. Because, am on a mission assigned by God. So I have to follow a strict regiment. In the event I do not comply to many of the accepted norms of my generation, no one should misread me! For it's just me. And that's who I am!

Am just not photogenic!

Once in a while some kids around me may outsmart me and throw out a clip of mine. But please keep in mind, it is God's will! So I will have no qualms! Because, what is meant to be, will be!

The Bishop Ferguson High School Reunion: An SOS!

I am prompted to author this post because we are moving into another year 2018 in two weeks and some important things are seemingly getting obsolete and eluding our grasp while we, as a people, are not yet helpless. Like the age of the dinosaurs, most things are becoming extinct.

One of the prime examples of things eluding our grasp is The Bishop Ferguson Episcopal High School Alumni Association.

Bishop Ferguson Alumni Association was the first of its kind of Liberian high schools in the Americas. I stand corrected. It set the basis and guidepost for other alumni associations to develop. But for obvious reasons, the Association died a sad death in the Americas in the late 70s. And nothing has been heard about it since!

If my calculations serve me right, the death of the Association is approximately thirty years now.

While I don’t wish to find excuses for such sad situation, I would like to think that the opportunity exists to resurrect the Association ASAP!

So many opportunities and capacities abound.

1st, there are many alumni in both the Diaspora and Liberia. 2nd, most of these alumni are in better economic and social positions to provide the necessary tools and resources to make this happen. 3rd, the appetite is there to plant the seed and the requisite energy to harvest the fruits. 4th, succeeding generations are awaiting the resurrection to pluck into the enterprise and redevelop hope. 5th, there is a dire need for the Association to retake its place as its Alma Mater (Bishop Ferguson High School) is seemingly extinct besides the structure which, understandably, has been leased to The Tubman University in Harper.

All things considered, there is no more Bishop Ferguson High School in Maryland.

So the question abounds: can the School be resuscitated to retake its place as a fountain of 21st Century academic institution?

The answer is a resounding “Yes!”

Why?

Because, it is the remnant of the then Cuttington College. The College was first, in what is now known as Cavalla, built by the Episcopal Church. For whatever reason (s), the College was moved within the Spring Hill environs. For another reason, best known to history, the College was removed to Bong County where it has now grown into a university. Thus, The Bishop Ferguson High School replaced it at a location commonly referred to as “Snow Hill,” five minutes driving time from Downtown Harper City.

Bishop Ferguson High School was named in the stead of Bishop Samuel David Ferguson. History tells us, he was the first American born Black person to be elected a bishop of the Episcopal Church in Liberia. He was born at Charleston, South Carolina and died in Cape Palmas, Liberia. As a Missionary Bishop of Liberia, he founded what is now Cuttington University College. He also established the Bromley Mission.

And so, with this sort of rich history and academic excellence provided by The Bishop Ferguson High School, the need is dire, appropriate and timely for the School to be resuscitated. The first step in this direction is the rebirth of the Alumni Association.

I am calling all Ferguson Alumni to put aside their personal busy schedules and anything else barricading the rebirth of the process to re-engage in bringing alive the Association for the reemergence of the School!

I am ready! If you are, then let’s do it!
